Grub Worms: What They Are & Prevention

Add Grub Control Service For the Season

Grub worms (aka white grubs) are the number one killer of turf in Southeast Michigan. Over the course of a season, if left untreated, grubs can transform your property from a beautiful lush lawn into a neighborhood eyesore, but no need to worry, our grub control treatments can help!

Grubs are the offspring of beetles that lay their eggs in the root system of your turf during the summer. These grubs hatch in late August/early September and begin feeding on the roots until the cold weather drives them two to eight inches deeper into the soil where lawn grubs overwinter. When warm weather arrives in the spring, the grubs move up from the lower soil regions and feed near the surface until they become mature and develop into beetles through early June.

How Grub Worms Can Damage Your Lawn

Grubs can cause extensive damage to your lawn for multiple reasons. Either they are feeding on the root system of your turf or the damage can come from other animals digging to feed on the grubs themselves. In the spring as the lawn greens up and you find that your lawn has some areas that are not turning green at all, that could be a sign of damage caused by grubs feeding on that area the previous fall.

How To Check Your Lawn For Grub Worms

You can check your lawn for grub worms in a couple of different ways. First, you can try lifting up the “dead “areas of turf that you see by grabbing a handful of grass. If it just lifts up and has no roots holding it down you will know grubs have eaten that area.

You can also be on the lookout for animals coming into your yard (like birds, raccoons, and skunks). It could be that more they’re coming to your yard to dig in your lawn, looking for grubs to feed on.

Grub Worm Prevention

One of our most highly recommended services is our grub prevention treatment. We apply our grub control product in the summer to stop your grub problem before it even begins. To understand how this product works, you have to understand the Grubs life cycle.

Applying our grub control treatment in the summer between the time they begin mating and the time their eggs hatch prevents the next generation of grubs from existing in your lawn to being with. We guarantee this service for a full year!

Grub Worm Killer

If lawn grubs are already damaging your turf, don’t hesitate to call Lush Lawn immediately. Our grub killer application will stop them from doing any further damage.

We’ll do this by applying a curative grub application to your lawn which will eliminate active grubs in the soil. This is usually done in early spring or late fall and requires that you water your lawn for 60 minutes in the areas that we have treated. It will usually take up to 48 hours for grubs to die after this application has been completed.

We recommend waiting at least a week before you do any kind of slit-seeding application to the affected areas.

This service is guaranteed for 60 days! So, if by some strange circumstance you still have grub worms damaging your lawn after we’ve treated it, we’ll return and reapply FREE of charge.
