Liquid Aeration Service

Lush Lawn is excited to offer Liquid Aeration as a service choice, in addition to traditional core aeration. There are many benefits to using liquid aeration either in addition to core aeration or as a standalone service to improve your soil.

Why Aeration is Important

When you invest in our core aeration service, you can expect to:

  • Improving Drainage – If there is standing water in your yard after a normal rain, it likely needs aeration. This ponding means that your lawn has stopped absorbing water as efficiently as it should due to compacted soil. Aeration opens the soil and allows water to soak in deeply which helps your turf’s roots and prevents surface-level drainage problems.
  • Improves Overseeding Success – Aeration creates openings in the soil that let seeds have better soil contact which improves germination. Overseeding on hard, compacted soil will not deliver the same results as overseeding on aerated soil.
  • Combatting Disease and Brown Spots | Over time, aerating helps reduce this type of lawn damage. A well-drained lawn will prevent water from pooling at the surface and in turn, causing disease from the moisture. A deep, healthy root system is also your best defense against weeds, insects, and other conditions like brown spots.

No matter which type you choose, aeration is vital to the success of any lawn and should be considered a priority when planning your lawn care calendar for the year.

Benefits of Liquid Aeration

As crucial as aeration is, liquid aeration brings significant advantages to you, whether it is used alone, or in conjunction with core aeration. We are excited to offer this product to you, and we think you’ll love the results it brings as much as we do.

  • Aerate Any Time – Because this is a liquid product that is sprayed on your lawn, we can apply the treatment at any time: unlike core aeration which is typically done in the fall. Liquid aeration enables our technician to apply this treatment in the spring if you want to change your aeration schedule and see the benefits of aeration for the entire season.
  • No Mess – Liquid aeration eliminates unsightly holes all around the lawn and the littering of plugs everywhere from core aeration. While core aeration greatly enhances the health and appearance of lawns, many people don’t like how their lawn appears immediately following a core aeration. This hesitation is often because the grass can look worse before it gets better!
  • No Damage – Core aeration puts holes in the ground, and even with marking the location of sprinkler heads and invisible fences, accidents happen. Since we aren’t pulling cores out of the lawn there is no chance of damage.
  • 100% Coverage – Unlike traditional aeration, liquid aeration achieves 100% coverage of your lawn. Total coverage is something that traditional aeration can simply not do, as there will always be space between the “plugs” of lawn. Total coverage means that every inch of your lawn is receiving the nutrients, sunlight, and water that it needs.
  • 100% Save Money – Liquid aeration can SAVE you money. Liquid aeration applied in spring can help to increase the water absorption and holding capacity of your soil reducing the need to irrigate, saving you money on your watering bill.

More Than Just Aeration

Liquid aeration does more than just open the soil structure. Our patented and proprietary blend of microbes, macronutrients, and probiotics goes to work immediately encouraging the development of humus and improving the quality of the soil. This helps unlock the nutrients that are bound up in the soil and make them available to your lawn.

Slit Seeding Service

Do you have bare areas in your lawn?

Have you tried to plant grass seed in part of your lawn, but haven’t been successful? No worries, we can help you with that!

The best way to seed extremely thin or barren areas of dirt is through a technique called slit-seeding. What makes slit-seeding (also referred to as “slice-seeding”) such a great option for seeding projects is the way it embeds the seed directly into the soil. Soil to seed contact is extremely important for grass seed germination to be successful. Lush Lawn uses top of the line slit seeding equipment designed to sow the seed directly into the surface of the dirt giving it a great chance for germination. With proper watering, your bare areas will be a thing of the past. Once the grass gets a bit thicker you can start a lawn over-seeding program which will help make thin grass become thicker.

Remember that thick grass turf is great for weed control and will help to reduce or eliminate weeds and undesired grasses by keeping them from being able to take root in the first place.

When Slit-seeding we use only premium quality Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass seeds that include disease and insect resistant strands of seed to help the overall strength and resilience of your lawn.

Natural Lawn Care Service

More and more people are using natural lawn care techniques. Why? It’s not uncommon to live in a household where family members are sensitive to chemicals.

In fact, studies show that 1 in 4 Americans report chemical sensitivities — a large increase from years past. It’s also not uncommon to live in a household where natural products are simply favored based on health or environmental concerns, or oftentimes a combination of the two.

To give the best service to Lush Lawn customers and remain in touch with their needs, we offer a natural lawn care service that uses a natural lawn fertilizer. You’ll feel confident in the care your lawn receives, without having to worry about safety or negative environmental effects.

What Is Natural Lawn Care?

In its simplest terms, natural lawn care is a chemical-free method of maintaining lawns. Rather than using a chemical-based fertilizer, natural lawn care uses natural sources like plant and animal byproducts to revitalize the health of lawns. Natural fertilizers, for instance, release organic matter into soil that improves its structure (and therefore its ability to absorb water and nutrients) and also feeds microbes, which in turn adds more nutrients to the soil.

Because these fertilizers vary in composition from their synthetic counterparts, it’s natural that the speed of their effects varies. Whereas synthetic fertilizers have an immediate impact on the soil upon contact, natural fertilizers need time to break down before they’re absorbed into the soil. While this timeline can differ based on the temperature of the soil and its moisture levels, the natural route can take anywhere from two to six weeks to have an effect.

Our Natural Lawn Care Program

Natural Fertilizers

Lush Lawn’s natural lawn care service consists of a series of seven applications spread out throughout the growing season. Each lawn treatment includes a granular, slow-release fertilizer that avoids burning lawns. (This can happen when lawn fertilizers break down too quickly or force-feed the turf.) The fertilizer we use is a natural product that is made with feather, soybean, and bone meal, with no manure included.

Natural Weed Control

The idea behind natural weed control is that a healthy lawn and soil promote significant plant growth that will ultimately crowd out local weeds. By following best practices to keep the lawn as healthy and lush as possible, you can subsequently reduce problematic weeds.

To control weeds, it’s necessary to remove them manually or spot spray them with various non-selective treatments such as acetic acid (vinegar). However, this approach is not nearly as effective as chemical treatments and it can harm beneficial plants as well. Because of this, customers have the option to have a liquid weed control applied with each of our natural lawn care applications. Please note that our weed control is not a natural product. Customers can choose to either exclude the use of the weed control altogether or opt to spray weed control in some but not all applications. The latter strikes a balance between reducing the chemicals used on your property and keeping pesky weeds at a manageable level.

While we don’t offer a natural product to prevent crabgrass in the spring, we can add a liquid crabgrass pre-emergent to your second treatment. This is a great option for maintaining a primarily natural lawn while still reaping the benefits of a crabgrass-free lawn. (Please note that we can’t guarantee protection from crabgrass without applying a crabgrass preventative in the springtime.)

The Benefits of Our Natural Lawn Care Service

When you invest in our natural lawn care service, you can expect to:

  • Naturally develop a healthier root system that makes your lawn more resilient
  • Add essential nutrients back into your soil that feeds living parts of your lawn
  • Create a safe environment for children and pets sensitive to chemicals
  • Reduce the flow of chemicals within groundwater supplies to benefit the environment

Lawn Care Services & Weed Control

More and more homeowners are choosing to invest in their lawn and landscape. It not only helps them get the results they’re looking for, but it adds value to their home while increasing overall enjoyment of the space. In fact, according to the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), nearly 50% of Americans use a lawn care professional to help with their yard.

Why? Choosing the right local lawn care service provider for your home is important. A thriving lawn is not only visible to you, but also e to your guests, neighbors, and potential buyers, if you were ever to sell.

As a provider of local lawn care services, Lush Lawn is passionate about the value of lawn care and helping Southeast Michigan homeowners get the most out of their investment. Our team of licensed, well-trained, and experienced professionals utilizes the best products and techniques to make sure your lawn receives the exact level of care it needs and that you see the optimal results.

Why Is Lawn Care Important?

The Impact on Lawn Health

When it comes to lawn care, one health issue can easily snowball into a long string of problems. Consider the case where improper watering techniques lead to bare spots in your lawn. These bare spots serve as a favorable environment for weed growth, and if this issue is left untreated, weeds will continue to spread throughout your lawn at a rapid pace. As these problems pile on, the health of your lawn inevitably continues to decline — and the harder it becomes to reverse.

The Impact on Lawn Safety

Lawns are designed to be enjoyed, not create cause for safety concerns. But there are times when the latter is true. For instance, if soil becomes compacted and there’s nowhere for water to go, pools of moisture are likely to form on your lawn. Dangerous insects — mosquitoes, for instance — are attracted to this standing water and may in turn make your yard their home.

The Impact on Lawn Aesthetics

When a lawn isn’t properly cared for, it tends to show. Whether in the form of a thin lawn covered in thatch, filled with bare spots, or overcrowded with weeds. Whatever the picture might be, it can detract from your home’s curb appeal. It may also have a negative impact on how prospective buyers value your property in the future.

The Local Lawn Care Services We Offer

At Lush Lawn, we’ve developed an incredibly effective lawn care program that is administered by our team of knowledgeable lawn care professionals. Understanding that every lawn is unique — from different grass types to soil conditions — we pair our standard lawn care packages with a comprehensive list of specialized local lawn care services to cater to every need. These services include:

  • Aeration to break up compacted soil
  • Overseeding to repopulate bare spots
  • Lawn health evaluation and diagnosis
  • Treatment programs for soil health
  • A winter lawn preparation program

In addition to the lawn care services referenced above, we also offer weed control services too. Included in the price of our fertilization services, our weed control services treat various kinds of weeds that invade Southeast Michigan lawns. While removing eyesores, these treatments also ensure that your lawn has access to the nutrients it needs and that infestations are controlled.

Lawn Seeding Service

When portions of a lawn become thin — or even bare — the issue goes beyond a dull appearance. Whether caused by heavy foot traffic or extreme heat (among other factors), a thinned out lawn is more likely to be crowded out by weeds that compete for sunlight, water and other nutrients. This further weakens thin lawns, making them more prone to disease and pests.

The best way to thicken a thin lawn or ensure a lush lawn remains intact is with our lawn seeding service. With traditional overseeding and slit seeding options available, we’ll identify the best route to optimize seed germination and maintain a healthy looking lawn well into the future.

What Is Overseeding?

Overseeding refers to the process where new grass seed is spread over an existing lawn to fill in gaps, adding thickness and color. As the grass becomes greener and thicker, it’s a sign that the lawn has grown healthier.

By overseeding newer varieties of turf grass into an older lawn, you can help it better withstand insects, disease, drought, shady conditions and heavy traffic. This approach also helps reduce the amount of water, fertilizer and pesticides needed to keep it in tip-top condition.

How We Approach Overseeding

At Lush Lawn, we’ve overseeded our customers’ lawns for over 15 years — and in that time, we’ve learned a lot. We recognize that it’s best to overseed in the fall, as the combination of cooler temperatures and rain gives way to higher germination rates and thus greater success. That’s why we only perform overseeding in the late summer/early fall when the conditions are right for growth. (Too early: hot weather can cause new grass to go dormant before it has strong roots. Too late: it’s too cold for seeds to germinate.)

We also understand that it’s important to overseed your lawn when it’s freshly aerated. The tiny pores that aeration leaves behind significantly improve the contact between the grass seeds and the soil. This, in turn, leads to a better germination rate.

The success of our results also ties back to the type of grass seeds we use. We only overseed lawns with premium quality Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass seeds, both of which include disease- and insect-resistant strains of seed to boost lawn strength and resilience.

Recognizing that the two go hand-in-hand, please note that our lawn seeding service is only available in combination with our lawn aeration service.

The Benefits of Our Lawn Seeding Service

When you invest in our lawn seeding service, you can expect to:

  • Enhance the look of your lawn with a more unified green color and improved density
  • Increase the strength of your lawn and its resistance to invasion from pests or disease
  • Introduce new grass varieties that help beat out weeds and other undesirable grasses
  • Reduce stormwater run-off with dense grass that keeps nutrients where they should be

Lawn Winterizer Services

What is A Lawn Winterizer?

Is your lawn ready for fall? If not, you can get ready by applying a lawn winterizer treatment!

Fertilizing your lawn in early spring, when the weather begins to warm up is something that most homeowners are familiar with. That’s when the growing season begins for grass and other plants surrounding the property. However, fertilizer is also needed in the fall.

When the weather begins to cool, applying a lawn winterizer will help to protect and sustain the grass once the cooler temperature arrives. The fertilizer provides the nutrients it will need over the long, cold winter. They include nitrogen and potassium.

The nutrients will move through the grass plant to the roots. This prepares the lawn for the growing season— once the weather and soil temperatures start to warm up.  .

Lawn Winterizers Offer Protection

Even though the lawn may appear to “die”, it is actually going into dormancy to protect itself from the cold winter months with minimal sunlight. Properly applying a lawn winterizer to your lawn will ensure that your lawn comes back in the spring healthy and lush. The fertilizer feeds the active roots and supplies them enough food to sustain the winter, even after the snow begins to fall.

Type of Grasses in Southeast Michigan

In Southeast Michigan, all lawns contain cool-season grasses, such as fescues, bluegrasses, ryegrasses, and bentgrasses. Because of the cool-season grasses, it is vital to have a lawn winterizer applied before the temperature drops. Cool-season grasses grow differently than warm-season grasses. The majority of their nutrients are actually pulled in during the fall months to help balance out any stress they may have come under during the summer months. This process prepares the turf for the winter months.

When To Apply Lawn Winterizers

A cool-season grass typically needs an application in the early fall, and then again in late fall. If you need to get your lawn winterized, don’t hesitate to call any of our locations.

Why is Lawn Winterizer Important?

In Southeast Michigan, all lawns contain cool-season grasses, such as fescues, bluegrasses, ryegrasses, and bentgrasses.  Because of the cool-season grasses, it is vital to have a fall winterizer applied before the temperature drops.  Cool-season grasses grow differently than warm-season grasses as the majority of their nutrients are actually pulled in during the fall months to help balance out any stress they may have come under during the summer months, as well as prepare for the winter months.  This is why fall winterization and fertilizer are so important in our area.

If your turf has a history of struggling to stay green or you are concerned with the health and appearance of your property, the Fall Restoration program is exactly what would help. Our lawn care experts have created a comprehensive multi-step program that is specifically designed to improve the health of your soil and grass now while prepping it to rebound faster and stronger the following season.

Knock out weeds even before they surface next season, aerate your turf for better distribution of fertilizer in your soil, and reinforce your grass with the important nutrients it needs to be green when the weather gets warm again.

Professional Lawn Restoration Companies

Lawn repair or lawn restoration heals your landscape if it has been affected by pests or disease, instead, strengthening its foundational roots. Our repair experts quickly diagnose problem areas on your lawn, create a plan of action, and then implement that plan for you. Whether you have patches that need to be filled in by planting an extra layer of grass seed or treated for deficiencies, we are ready to help.

What is Included in the Fall Lawn Restoration Program?

Lush Lawn takes lawn care seriously, which is why unlike other lawn restoration companies we have used our expertise to create a lawn restoration and winterizer program that will protect and nourish your grass through every season.

The Lush Lawn Fall Restoration package contains the following services:

Two applications of slow-release fertilizer – Lush Lawn’s fertilizer applications are specifically formulated to extend the life of your grass by slowly introducing the proper nutrients into the soil. This means that when fertilized, your grass won’t suffer from burns caused by too much fertilizer or have an uneven amount distributed.
Two applications of weed control – With Lush Lawn’s weed control services, you won’t have to worry about weeds popping up in the spring. Lush Lawn technicians will apply blanket weed control over the entire lawn to control actively growing weeds, and then will follow up with spot weed control for those hard-to-control weeds.
Aeration – Get more out of your grass with the lawn aeration service provided by Lush Lawn. Aeration reduces soil compaction and allows for vital nutrients and applications to reach your lawn’s roots. Aeration makes your lawn stronger and greener. fall lawn care While we recommend using an aerator, we don’t recommend power raking to remove thatch as that can damage the grass roots.
Overseeding – Replenish your turf by laying down more seeds. As part of lawn restoration, overseeding is necessary to add new growth or to fill in patches.
Winterizer application – This treatment prepares your lawn for the coming cold weather by supplying specific nutrients that sustain dormant grasses through winter. Get a head start on next spring with this application.

Core Aeration Service

Lawns come with a basic set of needs: air, water, nutrients, sunlight and room to grow. When soil becomes compacted — typically a product of pressure from foot traffic or heavy machines — lawns fail to get these needs met. Compacted soil has a reduced pore space, which prevents oxygen, moisture and fertilizer from reaching the grass roots and limits their area to expand.

Core aeration services from Lush Lawn are designed to counteract soil compaction and the issues that come with it. Not only will you improve the health of your lawn in the present, but you’ll be well on your way to a better looking lawn in the future.

What Is Core Aeration?

Core aeration is a type of lawn aeration that uses a plug aerator to remove plugs of soil, creating holes in compacted soil. These small holes help the soil breathe and create routes through which nutrients can enter the soil and penetrate through to grass roots. The plugs that were removed stay on top of your lawn where they break down and return nutrients back to the soil.

Core aeration is one of the most popular types of lawn aeration, and for good reason. As the name suggests, plug aerators used for core aeration mechanically remove plugs from the soil — creating true breathing room for the soil and the grass. Spike aeration, on the other hand, uses a machine with solid tines to poke holes into the soil, creating gaps that are likely to be covered quickly once again.

How We Approach Lawn Aeration

At Lush Lawn, our core aeration service helps lawns stay lush and healthy year-round. Using state-of-the-art equipment to ensure optimal results, we give lawns the room they need to absorb nutrients — all while eliminating areas of standing water that can lead to lawn diseases. We recommend at least one core aeration service in the spring or fall, and even better if you’re able to aerate twice per season.

Please note that we do not thatch or power rake lawns. A small layer of thatch actually helps grass store nutrients, while its breakdown invites microbial activity into soil that ultimately helps nutrients circulate through the ground. Plugging your turf with an aerator reduces the amount of thatch, but doesn’t fully remove it — a much healthier process for your lawn in the long run.

In combination with our fall aeration service, we also offer overseeding as well. Applying lawn seed after aeration improves the contact that seed has with the soil, and thus results in a better germination rate. Beyond thickening your lawn, overseeding can help even out the appearance of your lawn over time as well minimize or get rid of weeds and undesirable grasses.

The Benefits of Our Lawn Aeration Services

When you invest in our core aeration service, you can expect to:

  • Give your grass roots better access to air, water and other nutrients that fuel growth
  • Manage layers of thatch on your lawn so as to reduce potential pest or disease issues
  • Improve soil drainage to avoid ponding of water around homes and stormwater runoff
  • Better prepare grass for the stress of summer droughts and freezing winter temperatures

Weed Control Service

While weeds can be an unsightly addition to any lawn, their presence signifies much deeper issues. From the space they take up to the nutrients they absorb, weeds inevitably compete with healthy grass, causing it to become weaker and more susceptible to disease and pests. In this weakened state, lawns tend to grow thinner with bare spots — the type of conditions in which weeds thrive, and existing problems continue to spread.

At Lush Lawn, we’ve developed a comprehensive weed control program that eliminates current weed problems and protects your lawn for the future. That’s less time you’ll spend fighting back against weeds and more time to enjoy your outdoor space.

How Does Weed Control Work?

When weed control products are applied to lawns, they interfere with weed growth by stopping root formation. In the case of pre-emergent herbicides applied before seeds germinate, products inhibit cellular division within the root system. In the case of post-emergent herbicides applied after seeds germinate, products move down the plant stem to the root system and kill weeds.

clover weed yard

One way weed control products are often categorized is selective and nonselective. Whereas a nonselective product does not distinguish between different plant types and kills upon contact, a selective product targets only specific plants (per the product label) and leaves others alone.

For this reason, selective products tend to be the most suitable option for residential lawns.

Common Weeds in Southeast Michigan

In Southeast Michigan, there are a number of weed populations that tend to emerge year after year. Here are some of the most common ones — several of which are difficult to remove:

  • Clover
  • Poison Oak
  • Spurge
  • Purslane
  • Henbit
  • Yellow Rocket
  • Wild Plantain
  • Carrot
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Strawberry
  • Wild Violet
  • Nutsedge
  • Chickweed
  • Knotweed
  • Black Medic
  • Dock
  • Veronica
  • Buckthorn
  • Dandelions

Our Weed Control Services Help Homeowners Fight Back

Weed control services are one of the main components of our lawn care program — and are included with the price of our lawn fertilizer applications. The program includes blanket liquid weed control applications in both the spring and the fall, as well as spot treatments for any remaining weeds when our technicians stop by to fertilize throughout the seasons. We’re also proud to offer free service calls to retreat for weeds between applications when at least five applications are scheduled.

While many of our customers are interested in both fertilization and weed control, we also recognize that some Southeast Michigan homeowners are focused solely on weed removal. That’s why we also offer a residential program for only weed control. This standalone program features three herbicide applications — and in conjunction with our free service calls in-between visits, guarantees to take care of all your broadleaf weeds.
